Today marks the play of the semifinal matchups for the 2025 Toronto Open. The first match will be between first seed Alexander Zverev from Germany and 11th seed Karen Khachanov from Russia, while the second match will be an all-American shootout between Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
Zverev leads the H2H against Khachanov 5-2, and he has won the last three meetings against the Russian all in straight sets. The German has had to battle through several tough matches, including three-setters against Matteo Arnaldi and defending champion Alexei Popyrin. Zverev will be keen on getting his hands on the Toronto trophy once more, having won the tournament in 2019, but he will be wary of the big-hitting, strong-minded game of Khachanov. The Russian has had a less eventful path to the semi-finals, having acquired a hat-trick of straight-set wins along with a three-setter early in the tournament to make it this round. With straight-set wins against Casper Ruud and Alex Michelsen, both players that he has never beaten before in their previous meetings, he will arrive into this match with confidence.
In spite of this, I still predict that Zverev will have the edge over Khachanov. The German has historically performed well on the big-stages in the penultimate rounds leading to the final; this characteristic applies to the Grand Slams, the Master Series, and even the lower-level tournaments. At this stage of the tournament, Zverev should have settled into the conditions and his form by now, and he does not too fatigued despite being on court longer than his opponent. Furthermore, he will be holding the mental cushion against Khachanov, having beaten him in their previous three meetings easily in straights. I don't think, however, that it will be this easy this time. Khachanov has been the definition of 'revenge' this tournament, defeating opponents to whom he has never beaten before. I just don't think that he has enough mental fortitude to defeat Zverev, who is arguably on a whole other level compared to his previous opponents. It is likely that Zverev will win in three.
The other semi-final matchup will be between two big-serving Americans who have been in tremendous form as of late. Both players hold very similar game styles; they especially emphasize the classic play of serve-plus-one. Shelton has had to battle to get to the semi-finals, having been pushed to the brink against Brandon Nakashima and Flavio Cobolli before an impressive win in his first encounter against Alex De Minaur. Assuming he is not fatigued from reaching the late stages of back-to-back tournaments, he will cause trouble for the #1 American. Fritz himself has had to fight to reach the semis, albeit. not as much as Shelton. In his four matches, only one went to three sets: the midnight blockbluster against Jiri Lehecka. He should come into this match fresher, which should give him an edge.
Fritz also won his previous encounter against Shelton. It was a three-set win against Shelton at Indian Wells in 2023. While this previous meeting should give Fritz some level of mental confidence against Shelton, he will be very wary that Shelton is a completely different player now than he was in 2023. However, I believe that Fritz will have this meeting. Despite Shelton's recent success across the year, he struggles to win in the later stages of tournaments across all levels. This is not just limited to the Grand Slams, where he loses to the likes of Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner, but also to lower-level tournaments where he struggles to beat players ranked higher than him. Fritz is also more experienced at the bigger stages, having won a masters 1000, played in the Nitto ATP Finals, and reached the final of the 2024 US Open. I expect Fritz to oust Shelton in three sets.
Predictions:
Zverev def. Khachanov in three
Fritz def. Shelton in three
