Today will see two of the four quarterfinals of the 2025 Toronto Open in action. The first match will be a fourth H2H meeting between first seed Alexander Zverev (GER) and 18th seed and defending champion Alexei Popyrin (AUS). Ensuing this tussle will be a second meeting between USA's very own Alex Michelsen (26) and Karen Khachanov, the 11th seed from Russia.
In all three meetings between Zverev and Popyrin, Zverev has come out on top. Even more notable is the fact that he has not yet dropped a set to the Australian. However, he will be wary that Popyrin is coming into this match as the defending champion, having accomplished a dream run to the title last year and beating players of high caliber, including a handful of top-10 opponents. Despite Popyrin's poor form leading into this tournament, he arrives into this match with a 10-match win streak at the Toronto Open and coming off three quality wins this week, including former champion Daniil Medvedev and all-star Holger Rune.
While Zverev is the projected favorite to win this match, I strongly believe that Popyrin will pull off the upset, as he has regained both his confidence and level throughout this week. Zverev himself is searching for this confidence, and the wins he has had have been decent, but not spectacular. A tight encounter against Australian Adam Walton in the second round, a tight third round match against Italy's Matteo Arnaldi, and a walkover over Francisco Cerundolo put him in a slight state of vulnerability that Popyrin should be able to expose. I predict that Popyrin will oust the German in three tight sets.
The other matchup is between Michelson and Khachanov. Michelson won their previous matchup at the beginning of this year at the Australian Open, and he remarkably did so in straights. Michelson also had a standout win this week against third seed Lorenzo Musetti before dispatching good friend Learner Tien in the next round, showing his great form thus far.
But in spite of this, I am giving the edge to Khachanov for this match. Khachanov has been in brilliant form as of late, and has shown he can sustain in the deep stages of big touraments (having made the semis before of multiple majors). Although injuries have been a factor in his courtime in the past year, he has come back resurgent. The Russian had a good win against Casper Ruud in the previous round, whom he was unable to beat in their previous meetings (including in the semis of the 2022 US Open). Furthermore, Khachanov is more of the veteran player here and is likely to put his experience on the big stage to good use in today's match. The only concern would be if he is able to mentally player every game of high quality; he had a lapse against Ruud in the second set that put him in a bit of trouble. As long as Khachanov can play his best points in the ones that matter the most, he should be able to edge out Michelsen in a tight three-set match.
Predictions:
Popyrin def. Zverev in three sets
Khachanov def. Michelsen in three sets
