8/5/25 2025 Toronto Quarterfinals: Day 2

Today marks day 2 of the quarterfinals of the 2025 Toronto Open. The first quarterfinal will be between big-serving American Taylor Fritz and hard-hitting Russian Andrey Rublev, while the second quarterfinal will be a shootout between American youngster Ben Shelton and in-form Australian Alex De Minaur.

The matchup between Taylor Fritz and Andrey Rublev is intriguing. The two have already played nine times on the tour across their careers, with Fritz leading the H2H 5-4. Of these nine meetings, seven have been on hard courts. Of these seven meetings, four took place on outdoor hard, the same conditions that the two will be playing at later today in Toronto.

Given that Fritz leads Rublev 3-1 in their previous outdoor hard matches, and is currently in good form, I would give the edge to him in the upcoming matchup. The American had relatively straightfoward wins in his first two matches against Roberto Carballes Baena and Gabriel Diallo, before scrapping his way through the Round of 16 against Jiri Lehecka in a three-set marathon match that finished past midnight, featured three consecutive tiebreaks, and zero breaks of serve from either player. He comes into this quarterfinal match with a ton of confidence, but he will be wary of the Russian's hard-hitting tendencies, which have proven troublesome for the American in the past.

Despite his recent struggles, Rublev has been doing well so far in this tournament, having to fight through two three-set matches in his previous rounds to get to this position, against Lorenzo Sonego and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. Despite dropping the first set against both players, he has shown his resilience and fighting spirit, and is sure to give a tough test to Fritz. However, I feel that Fritz has been in good form this year, and I expect him to come through this stern test. The only concern for Fritz is his stamina at this point: his time on court against Lehecka eclipses his total time on court against Carballes Baena and Diallo combined. He also played a midnight blockbuster against Davidovich Fokina last week in Washington, where he ran out of gas in the third, ultimately costing him the match. As long as Fritz watches his stamina and does not break down physically, he should have this match in three sets.

The other intriguing match is between Shelton and De Minaur. Shelton had to dig deep against Flavio Cobolli in the Round of 16, breaking serve at the last possible moment before edging the Italian out in a third-set tiebreaker. He also did the same against fellow American Brandon Nakashima in the third round, where he dropped the first set before roaring back in style. Currently blooming with confidence, Shelton and his serve pose a threat to any player on the ATP tour.

But De Minaur is tricky. The Australian has been in amazing form the past two weeks, having won Washington last week and is now riding a seven-match win streak. While this usually bodes concerns for his stamina, De Minaur only had to play two matches to reach this round, having received a walkover against Christopher O'Connell in the third round before completing a tough three-setter against Frances Tiafoe. De Minaur will be coming into this match with a mind of fresh confidence and pair of fresher legs, which should give him the edge against Shelton.

I also think that De Minaur's gamestyle will work well against Shelton. The 'Demon' is known for his notorious speed on the court and counter-punching game. Against Shelton, whose game heavily relies on the one-two punch and his monster serve, De Minaur will most likely enjoy using the speed of Shelton's shots against him, and using his own physical speed to track down any fireballs thrown his way. One caveat of Shelton's game is his consistency, and De Minaur is likely to exploit this as long as he maintains his own style. Given that the two have not met before in a matchup, this will likely allow De Minaur to get the upper hand quickly. I think this will get him over the line in straight sets.

Predictions: Fritz def. Rublev in three

De Minaur def. Shelton in two
